Better encoding = smaller file sizes for storage on Vimeo

Wth limits on storage on Vimeo

South Funen Archipelago // Views from Bjørnø from [ PIXEL VIKING ] on Vimeo.

    PIXEL VIKING

I uploaded the .mp4 file from this video: vimeo.com/5792065 to their site(betterencoding.com). They turned my 180mb file into a 23mb .mp4 file.

I'm not sure, I can see a difference - can you?

With a weekly max. of 5GB of Vimeo space, I'm not going to use their service for my short videos but since each Vimeo file needs to be below 1GB,
longer videos might benefit from this

BetterEncoding.com test from [ PIXEL VIKING ] on Vimeo.

If you can run both together and mute the sound on one file you can make a direct comparison Smile

I thought I'd take a screen shot of a still frame from each video Smile

    the first

    the second

no difference apparent on file size and histograms look identical Smile

As you say both shots look almost identical. I wonder where the 157Mb went?

Well I think the answer is that Vimeo convert the original file to a Flash version for
viewing which is the file you watch and then store the original for download, although they're
stopping that soon and will only have the FLV (flash video file) for download this will save them
a lot of space and speed up things on their server, but will they take that into account as far
as the 5 GB or 6 GB storage limit per customer? betterencoding.com must use similar encoding
to get the file sizes small without an IQ difference to Vimeo flv files. Original files that are
larger in size always look better when viewed on the PC compared to their flash counterparts that
are shown on video sites Smile

    I thought I'd give betterencoding.com a try with a 236MB WMV file it reduced to 19MB
and then uploaded to vimeo Smile

Although HD is off but can be viewed in HD on Vimeo.... where did the 200MB go Shocked scratch
