    Free spirit (Jaffe fountain)

Post by musket on Thu Feb 26 2009, 09:00

An old drinking fountain in Belfast centre (Jaffe fountain)
there is no where in public that you can
quench your thirst, all these old drinking
fountains don't deliver water any more Neutral

From my vast knowledge of Ireland, I believe these fountains never dispensed water. They were the original Guiness taps. People lined up for hours waiting to quench their thirst. On rainy days people moved indoors and thus began Guiness Pubs from coast to coast.

In my childhood I remember drinking from similar fountains
there was a big metal cup on a chain that was tethered to
the fountain and was used to take water from the fountain Smile

In later times other types of public drinking fountains
were in use, but now they seem to be a thing of the past
I haven't come across any in a long time Smile

There used to be horse troughs as well but since horse
power yielded to other forms of transport they disappeared as well Sad

I think it's because they can sell bottled water now
that public drinking water was abandoned.

Thanks for commenting everyone Smile .........musket
